That was so close.
Hey, everyone.
Welcome back to another exciting episode of Field Trip.
I'm Matt, and I'm Nicole.
Today we are about to dive into the fantastic and sometimes challenging world of disc golf.
That's right.
And earlier this month, we had an awesome lesson with a professional disc golfer, Kathleen Venus, who came to the station and introduced us and some WAMC colleagues to the basic rules of disc golf, and gave us a crash course on how we should try and throw.
Now we're ready to put our newly learned skills to the test.
We're here today at Stephen P Wallace Park to participate in a doubles tournament.
While it would be entertaining for Matt and I to be partners.
We decided we thought we would bring in some ringers.
I have the pleasure of being partnered up with our fearless leader, Kathleen.
And I'll be partnering up with the bold and brilliant Will Pedigo, our colleague at Double MHC, who is no stranger to a disc golf course.
But this is his first time in a tournament.
So here goes nothing.
Let's hope we make you proud.
While we get ready, here is a recap and a quick look at our lesson.
We hope you can pick up a few tips to.
So if you know the game of golf or even mini golf, similar concept where you are trying to get your disc rather than a ball in the target and the least amount of throw is possible.
have to get the disc into the basket which is the target.
In order to complete a hole it most courses are 18 holes.
So you might play a nine hole loop or an 18 hole loop, but a lot of similarities to ball golf, we call it So probably the most common throw is a backhand throw.
if this were the front of my tee, my hips are going to be facing to the side, maybe a little more left or right, depending on where I'm supposed to aim.
and I'm reaching back and I'm actually looking backwards too, and pulling my arm through, now, we did take a little time to practice since then, but we could definitely use a lot more.
Kathleen is going to continue to teach us throughout the afternoon because we have heard there are a lot of nuances in this game.
Oh, okay.
I think they're getting ready to start.
Nicole.
Let's go show up ourselves.
Okay.
121234. the first throw off of a tee pad, especially for around 300ft holes, you will have a driver, driver has a thinner edge.
It's a little bit like sharper of a rim.
And these will fly a little farther because they want to cut through the air more.
And that will typically be your initial shot.
Okay.
All those less distracted?
Yeah.
You get it?
Oh!
Oh my gosh.
Very nice.
Well, that was great.
Oh my God.
Damn.
How did you do that?
Oh, wait.
Fingers back.
Keep it under there.
Oh, it's too high.
You know what?
That's great.
Yeah, I but.
so once you get closer to the basket you might be throwing a mid-range.
Which also has a semi sharper edge, but it might be a little dollar depending on the disc.
And these are going to fly, with a little less glide, potentially a little shorter.
These are your approach discs.
You can generate a lot of spin if your hips are a little closer together, because it's all coming from your hips and pushing up from your legs.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh, we were close.
You're close.
Oh.
We're close.
Okay, so push with my.
Yeah.
So, like.
Oh, yeah.
Oh!
Yes.
Almost like this.
One.
Oh.
That's this golf.
That's hilarious.
you would use a putter to finish the hole.
So putters have a really dull edge.
Some of them are even flatter than this.
I personally like to do kind of a fan grip under the desk, where my fingers aren't exactly holding on to the inside of the rim, but rather kind of spread out a little bit underneath it.
And my thumb is pushing down.
So I'm kind of touching my thumb to where my fingers are under the desk right now, and I use my pointer finger on the front of the desk just to help me, kind of with my aim and making sure I'm able to let go of the desk.
So some people like to use all fingers underneath it when they putt.
It's a preference thing.
It's kind of what feels good.
Some people step out a little farther or a little closer together.
Kind of depends on your comfortability.
And things like trees.
So if you are throwing from behind a tree, you might need like a really big step out to be able to throw around the tree.
On.
the.
I don't overcomplicate this.
Okay.
This I can't believe we played our first tournament.
We learned so much.
And congratulations to.
Nicole.
I Disc golf is a blast, and we encourage everyone to get out there and give it a try.

Disc golf.
See you next time on Field trip.
And until then, keep throwing those discs.
And don't forget to let us know where you think we should go next.
I don't know what I'm doing.
Oh.
That's better.
I would throw it.
Yeah.
Let's see.
I gave it a hat last, bro.
Oh one.
Oh, Wow.
That was for the camera.
Oh, good.
Run!
Oh!
Woohoo!
Great putt, great putt.
plus.
Super four.
That great.
Yeah.
Good work.
I'm so proud of y'all.

It's a preference thing.
It's kind of what feels good.
Don't hit the branches.
So Oh my gosh.
Oh, that's.
Oh my gosh, that's beautiful.
I don't want to go pop, but I don't wanna go down here.
But, see, that's, That's great.
I'm behind the pole.
Yeah.
So we're on for two.
Three.
Good.
I did hit a branch, and that was the only thing I was told not to do on this one.
So my desk is right here.
We're going to go with cats this is over by the goal, but we're doing okay.
So back Right now.
Oh, wow.
Awesome.
That was a really good.
Oh.
It's better.
Oh my gosh.
Wow.
Oh my God!
Yeah.
Oh my God!
So now we're going to be thrown into a headwind.
Yes.
What are you throwing.
So since the wind is coming at us more it's going to slow down our desks a little bit and also mess with the stability.
So how much of this wants to go left?
Our desks are going to go a little bit straighter this time.
Oh, my gosh, that's a great throw Oh my God.
Oh.
000 that's okay.
That's a great shot from my partner.
Figured out.
Figured out.
I'm hearing you guys.
You guys.
Oh.
That's this golf.
Yes.
Well, it's going well.
It's going to go forever, don't it?
Yes.
Okay.
That's great.
Well, see, that's why I was on my team.
What's gone wrong Oh, no.
Don't go this far.
Fine.
Great.
Nice.
You made me look at the tower.
That's why he's up.
Let's see.
Yeah.
is such a cool shot.
I'm going to try to do the run for the first time.
It's.
Not.
Don't hit it!
Oh, I guess love.
I think it's like.
Oh, for certain competition.
Like.
Understand the format?
Yeah.
So that helps us.
In this situation as quickly that makes me crazy.
Thank you.
Yeah.
Get it?
Nicole.
That was so close.
Run.
Help!
Oh, that's a good sling.
Sling?
Yeah.
Got through everything.
That's nice.
Well done.
I didn't feel so good.
Well, yeah, it didn't hit.
Oh, get through.
Wow.
It's like.
I don't know what I'm doing.
This is.
time.
Okay.

Good Oh, that was amazing.
I actually wasn't Oh, right.

Wow.
It was.
All right, I get okay.
Good shot.
Oh, you got to get a start on the GoPro.
Yeah.
Oh, I forgot.
I got it.
Oh.
like.
Oh, complicate this.
Yay!
Football.
Okay.
Oh, golly.
That one hurt.
Okay.
Did it.
All right, so three.
Four.
Yep.
So we're tied again, which is fun.
Cool.
All right.
We're going up ahead.
More to the right.
No wind was right out loud.
And y'all now has the box because you got the better score.
So you throw first.
I'm going to throw the laser there.
Oh, nice.
So it turned.
It's a. River.
Okay.
Like never.
It turns and never be.
So I thought, Nice nice nice.
Round.
If the wind for the wind's going to do something.
I know it's so wild today.
You.
You go with the rainbow colors.
Yes.
Yeah.
You're a part of it is like I tried different orders in my bag of how I put my discs.
Like I've done them.
Yeah.
The slower speed, the higher speed.
But, I tried to be like a really big, supporter of the LGBTQ community.
So that's honestly part of it.
Like, I have my trans flag on here.
I've got another rainbow pin I've got to put on, and then I have a patch on there too.
So that's part of it.
Honestly.
Yeah.
So we can't see the baskets, right?
Well, you can't do that.
So I like yeah.
So I'm not going to try to get in there.
I'm going to try to go around it but you never know.
Yeah.
In this case it probably would be better to be on the Elliot side and throw through those trees.
You aim a little bit.
To the right.
You know actually.
Really.
Yeah.
Look at the when you.
He's going to get a shot of you.
Okay.
Close up so you can see this.
Nice.
Cool.
What do we got you.
What's.
Oh, that was amazing.
Nice.
That was great.
I actually wasn't planning to.
Do it that far over, but I was ready.
Oh, right.
Oh my God.
There you go.
Oh, no.
Oh, that was it.
Oh, man.
That's years away.
Oh.
You want to go?
Yeah.
But fortunately, my teammate had a great throw.
It can happen.
It's the one in the woods, right?
Yep.
Get it?
Let's go.
That was.
That was beautiful.
Great shot.
Yeah.
Sounds good.
I'm going to do you a better.
Wow.
A.
That's a that's what I wanted.
I know though.
I get.
Thanks.
So to go.
Yeah.
Oh, I forgot the GoPro.
Great shot.
You.
Thanks.
This is, like, right next to that.
I mean, it's still a little far, but.
Nice shot there.
Thank you.
That's great.
Will's got to come back from Narnia to part with it.
I.
Mean you.
It's.
Yeah.
Okay.
Yeah.
Oh my God.
Yeah.
There you are.
It's pretty far.
I would throw it.
Yeah.
Let's see.
I gave it a hat last, bro.
Leave your desk.
Oh, you're a little closer.
Oh one.
Oh, you almost made up for that.
Good run.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
Always a great.
Let's go.
Nicole.
We'll.
Yeah.
And then I do it.
You can flip it.
Yeah.
It gives you a couple inches.
Should I try my other one?
That will pop?
You might not need it.
If yes, please do.
Do it up.
Wow.
That was for the camera.
I loved it.
That was get.
Well, I haven't really been on my putting game tonight, so we'll see.
Oh, dang it.
Oh!
I probably should grab one.
Yeah.
Oh, good.
Run!
Oh!
The classic oh one.
Right between the two of those would have been perfect.
You got the circle.
You're just.
I have faith in you.
You could do this.
Get it?
Let's go.
Nice pass.
Yeah.
There's.
That's my partner again.
But I didn't know what you're going to take it off.
Oh, okay.
Yeah.
You got it.
Woohoo!
Great putt, great putt.
All right.
Well, they picked up a stroke on it.
That's all right.
All right.
You want to grab scores.
Yes.
On this three.
Okay.
All right.
Well, in that four and we got a three thanks to my partner's.
Great putt.
He with two more holes to play.
Check the.
The leaderboard is next six.
And we're at plus one and plus two.
So plus.
Super four.
That great.
Yeah.
Good work.
I'm so proud of y'all.
Keep playing.
Are you guys playing in honor of our team?
I think so.
I think we'll.
Take.
You want to play?
I'm done.
Well, tell us.
Keep the score.
Yeah.
Okay.
All right.
Dale, I represent us.
I can.
A little foreshadowing, I think we know who's gonna win.
We'll report back, and we will.
Report back the.
First.
Sweet.
You give you back your toys.
I'm going to welcome back.
So I snagged it out of here.
That was so much fun.
Chasing the light looks good.
Okay.
You feel like guys?
Thank you.
And nice to meet you, too.
That was really fun.
Yeah, it was fun.
Thanks for the experience.
Yeah.
I hope you'll come out.
I absolutely love to take you out again.
That was amazing.
What do you mean you're like right under the basket.
Yeah.
That was a great shot.
Thank you.
Oh my gosh I'm so impressed.
I could throw like 40ft when I set it.
Oh.
000 that's okay.
That's a great shot from my partner.
All right, here we go.
Yeah.
Go, man.
Hey, you got that?
Me?
Figured out.
Figured out.
I'm hearing you guys.
You guys.
Oh.
That's this golf.
That's hilarious.
Like, the whole time I was like, don't.
Yes.
Well, it's going well.
It's going to go forever, don't it?
Yes.
Okay.
That's great.
Well, see, that's why I was on my team.
All right, we got this.
Oh, my.
This isn't too far away.
It's a girl.
My perspective was very funny on that whole thing.
So they just golf?
They.
This will be fun.
At least in some way.
Nobody's watching this.
I see not so much as a bad judge in that sense.
I think you're right.
Yeah, I think you're right.
You think that?
Like a good spot.
You got.
All right.
Sometimes when you putt, it's helpful to put down a mini.
Where in doubles that often most people don't really care what your best, but it gets you, like a couple inches closer.
You want to pop?
You wanna know?
From right here?
You have to stand with one foot right behind it.
So you can stand whatever.
You.
That one will edit that.
now, we did take a little time to practice since then, but we could definitely use a lot more.
Kathleen is going to continue to teach us throughout the afternoon because we have heard there are a lot of nuances in this game.
Oh, okay.
I think they're getting ready to start.
Nicole.
Let's go show up ourselves.
Okay.
I am Kat Bemis.
I am a teacher.
Actually, I teach online.
And disc golf is one of my passions.
One of my side gigs, I guess.
So if you know the game of golf or even mini golf, similar concept where you are trying to get your disc rather than a ball in the target and the least amount of throw is possible.
So lowest score wins, just like golf.
A lot of the terminology is the same as golf.
There's, you know, birdies, eagles, bogey.
Just like in ball golf.
You have to get the disc into the basket which is the target.
In order to complete a hole it most courses are 18 holes.
So you might play a nine hole loop or an 18 hole loop, but a lot of similarities to ball golf, we call it So when I first moved out to New York because I'm originally from Massachusetts, I didn't really know many people in the area.
My husband and I moved out here about ten years ago, and we were just looking for something to do.
We used to play ultimate Frisbee, which is a whole nother disc game.
And so we started picking up disc golf here and there and just playing maybe once a month.
And turned into, you know, like, we go out a couple times a week now.
We found some doubles events where you go and meet up with other locals and play random doubles rounds where you have a partner and you take each other's throws and try and play for cash.
It's a lot of fun.
And so disc golf really pulled us in because of that community.
So even though it's a sport that is solo and you're looking for like your best score winning against other people, there's actually really a huge community and disc golf.
of them, yes.
Most of the people in disc golf are nice.
Now, I would say that everyone around this area especially is very, very kind.
We have a huge community in the Capital District, honestly.
We have a Facebook group which doesn't even have everyone in the area, which has a couple thousand people in the disc golf, group, and that's called disc cap and, disc cap itself is a not for profit.
And the area where we help putting courses and maintain courses, we help, schools get discs.
If people are looking for lessons, we help connect them.
So it's a really cool community.
the different discs.
So some of the basics of disc golf are again, you're trying to get the lowest score on a pole as possible.
So most holes are going to be a par three around 300ft typically.
And they'll have a tee pad kind of like regular golf where you are throwing off of and for the first throw off of a tee pad, especially for around 300ft holes, you will have a driver, driver has a thinner edge.
It's a little bit like sharper of a rim.
And these will fly a little farther because they want to cut through the air more.
And that will typically be your initial shot.
So a lot of the same terminology as ball golf.
But they're discs rather than clubs.
And so once you get closer to the basket you might be throwing a mid-range.
Which also has a semi sharper edge, but it might be a little dollar depending on the disc.
And these are going to fly, a little with a little less glide, potentially a little shorter.
These are your approach discs.
So the mid-range is are good for those shots that are like 200, down to 100ft shots as you're approaching the basket.
And then you would use a putter to finish the hole.
So to get into the target, which is a basket, you would putt into the basket.
And the putters have a really dull edge.
Some of them are even flatter than this.
And with the putter it's not so much throwing as it is, more of a pushing motion or a spin.
So a lot of putters, you'll hold kind of with a slightly different grip.
So me personally, I hold it with a fan grip and a finger on the edge, and push it out towards the basket.
after you've gotten close to the hole and you're, you know, 80ft, 50, 30ft, a little closer to the basket, once you step up to your lie where your discus, you can either step right behind your desk or you can use a mini or a mini marker.
And you can put it directly between the basket and your desk.
And this gives you a couple extra inches.
Also, it's good if you have to throw the same disc you already threw, because then you have, a marker to show where your desk was versus just picking it up, and then maybe moving to the side a couple inches or so.
So you can either stand behind your desk or you can put a mini.
You don't have to put a mini unless you want to pick that disc up.
So this is advantageous if like, there's a route under your desk and you want to mark in front of it so you can move your foot forward a little bit or something in that area.
So two basic putting stances, that most people typically use are a straddle putt where you're kind of hip width apart.
Some people step out a little farther or a little closer together.
Kind of depends on your comfortability.
And things like trees.
So if you are throwing from behind a tree, you might need like a really big step out to be able to throw around the tree.
You can generate a lot of spin if your hips are a little closer together, because it's all coming from your hips and pushing up from your legs.
So even though it looks like a lot of arm, a lot of that power is coming from your your hips and your legs, and you're really kind of pushing towards the basket.
So for the typical grip, and again, it depends on the player.
But for me personally, I kind of do this funky little fan grip with a pointer finger in front.
So when you go to putt, if you're in a straddle putt again, you're using your hips and your legs a lot.
You want to push off from your legs.
And so as you're doing so, you're sort of coming low to high a little bit with the disc, not drastically, because then you're going to sink.
It really left probably.
But this is where you're building up that power and that spin.
And so as you come down, you push forward.
And that's going to help you get more spin on the disc.
All right, Nicole.
Oh.
So try using, like, your legs more than your arm.
So like, from here forward rather than back here.
Excuse me.
Yeah, you got it.
Oh.
Oh, we were close.
You're close.
Oh.
We're close.
Okay, so push with my.
Yeah.
So, like.
Oh, yeah.
And so for some people, that's uncomfortable.
Like, I only use a straddle putt when I'm a little closer to the basket because I can't.
I personally can't generate as much power.
Now again it's a preference thing.
It's depends on the golfer.
So the other typical stance, is what we call a stagger putt where you're dominant leg is behind the desk or mini, and your non-dominant leg is behind you.
And this is where you're going to generate that, that force, that push forward again.
So, when I am pushing off my left leg and my foot is not flat on the ground because then I can't push off of it as much.
So I'll typically start kind of with my toes in the ground and a little bent, both legs a little bent.
And this helps me to push off.
And sometimes my left leg will even leave the ground a little bit, not drastically, because we're not ballerinas, but enough to kind of push your momentum forward into the desk.
So it's all connected.
So like, you really should feel it coming from your foot into your legs, into your hips, and into that spin towards the desk.
That one will edit that.
As closer.
This is pretty far to honestly, like I was thinking, this isn't this is like 25% of the time I'm going to make this.
This isn't like, okay, typical.
Makes me feel better.
Yeah.
I mean, you feel good.
So in disc golf, and this isn't, like, a must know rule, but eventually, as you start playing more competitively with inside the circle, which is 33ft, you have to keep your body or feet behind your marker or your desk, so you can't move.
But when you're farther than that 33ft, which I believe we are right now, it's okay if your momentum pushes you forward over your desk.
So like right here, if I want to do kind of like a step putt, I can bring my foot forward.
And that's okay.
If I was within that 33ft, though, I have to keep my body behind my knee until the disc has left my hand.
Okay.
Yeah.
Okay.
So that's helpful.
All right.
Let's have some guest stars.
Sure.
So what do you want to do?
Some closer so that we make them make a basket?
Yeah.
So you can cut for a second.
