Hi, I'm Tim Chan, medical student.
If you or a loved one ha colon cancer, you're not alone.
It's the fourth most common cancer in adults and is becoming more common among young adults.
Fortunately, when caught and treated early the survival rate is about 90%.
The gold standard for diagnosis and screening is colonoscopy.
When your doctor uses a camera to examine the bowels during the procedure, the doctor can remove suspicious polyps that may turn into cancer.
And don't worry, your doctor will sedate you.
You can minimize your risk of colon cancer with regular exercise and avoiding tobacco, drinking alcohol, or eating processed meats.
Nonetheless, the recommendations still suggest getting screened at 45.
And if you have a family history of colon cancer, you might need to get it earlier.
Alternatives to colonoscopy screening now include at home tests as well, although colonoscopy are still the most accurate.
If interested, discuss thi with your primary care doctor.
I'm Tim chan, and this is my medical student minute.
